Affordable and Clean Energy

01 Policy Statement

RUET is committed to ensuring access to affordable, reliable and clean energy, and to reducing its energy consumption and carbon footprint. To fulfil this commitment, RUET will:

  • Improve campus energy efficiency.
  • Conduct regular energy audits and energy-performance monitoring.
  • Expand renewable-energy generation, particularly solar energy.
  • Promote clean-energy research, education, and innovation.
  • Support community capacity building on sustainable energy technologies.

02 Actions11 actions

  1. 1

Comply with national standards. Design, construct and renovate all buildings in line with the Bangladesh National Building Code, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan of the Power Division (Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources), and SREDA guidance.

  2. 2

Replace inefficient equipment on a planned schedule — LED lighting throughout, energy-efficient fans, inverter air conditioners, efficient motors and pumps, and efficient laboratory and workshop equipment — and make energy efficiency a stated criterion in all procurement specifications.

  3. 3

Maintain metering at campus level and sub-metering by building or floor; record monthly consumption and cost; and publish total annual consumption, consumption per square metre and per person, and the resulting emissions estimate. Carry out a detailed energy audit of campus buildings and utilities by qualified energy auditors on a stated periodic cycle, in line with SREDA energy audit requirements where applicable, with annual walk-through audits of the highest-consuming buildings, and publish audit findings and track implementation of the recommended measures.

  4. 4

Based on energy-audit findings and applicable government directions, RUET shall adopt operational temperature and equipment-control measures.

  5. 5

Apply passive design in new construction: orientation, shading, cross-ventilation, daylight, insulation and reflective roofing, to reduce cooling load before mechanical systems are specified.

  6. 6

Install and expand rooftop solar PV across academic buildings and halls, pursue net metering under the national net metering guidelines, add battery energy storage to reduce diesel generator running, and publish installed capacity and annual generation.

  7. 7

Adopt a Sustainable Investment and Procurement position, giving preference to low-carbon options in energy procurement and capital investment, and avoiding investment in new carbon-intensive energy assets on campus.

  8. 8

Through the Departments of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and related departments, offer courses on renewable energy technologies; support postgraduate research on solar, wind, biogas, biomass, energy storage, smart grids, energy-efficient buildings and electric mobility; and provide advisory support and incubation to student and community start-ups in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

  9. 9

Provide energy services to the public and private sector: energy auditing of industrial and commercial installations, design support for solar mini-grids and rooftop systems, and testing and consultancy, with results and case studies published where permitted.

  10. 10

Make faculty expertise available to government bodies, SREDA, BERC and utilities on net metering, smart grid, energy efficiency standards, clean cooking and renewable energy regulation, and record such contributions.

  11. 11

Provide demonstration and training on solar home systems, solar irrigation, improved cookstoves and biogas for communities, technicians and local entrepreneurs in the Rajshahi region.
