Life on Land

01 Policy Statement

RUET is committed to protecting, restoring and promoting life on land, by conserving biodiversity and managing its campus land in a sustainable way. To fulfil this commitment, RUET will:

  • Protect campus biodiversity and green spaces.
  • Promote native tree plantation and sustainable land management.
  • Enhance biodiversity through habitat conservation and restoration.
  • Support research and education on terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • Encourage environmental stewardship and ecological awareness.

02 Actions14 actions

  1. 1

    Conserve existing vegetation and the ecological features of the campus. Campus planning and development shall consider:

    • aprotection of existing mature trees;
    • bmaintenance of green areas;
    • cpreservation of suitable habitats;
    • denvironmentally responsible landscaping;
    • eavoidance of unnecessary vegetation removal;
    • frestoration or replanting where appropriate.
  2. 2

    Protect trees from unnecessary removal, damage and inappropriate pruning, RUET shall consider alternative arrangements where feasible before a mature tree is removed for essential construction or safety reasons.

  3. 3

    Provide compensatory replacement planting or ecological restoration where removal of trees is unavoidable for approved development or safety reasons, in accordance with university procedures and site conditions.

  4. 4

    Undertake tree plantation in suitable locations, giving priority to native species and selecting species with regard to local environmental conditions, ecological suitability, biodiversity, soil and water requirements and long-term maintenance needs; and plan land use for environmental sustainability, efficient use of developed land, protection of green spaces, soil conservation, climate resilience and long-term campus needs.

  5. 5

    Manage the campus landscape for native or climate-suitable vegetation, tree diversity, soil health, water-efficient planting, reduced chemical input, ecologically responsible maintenance, and safe and accessible green space.

  6. 6

    Incorporate environmental and ecological considerations into the planning and design of new infrastructure and major development, including:

    • aexisting vegetation;
    • bsoil characteristics;
    • cdrainage and surface water;
    • dgreen spaces and biodiversity;
    • elong-term ecological impacts.
  7. 7

    Reduce avoidable land degradation, soil erosion, uncontrolled excavation, soil contamination, loss of vegetation and improper waste disposal.

  8. 8

    Conduct and periodically update a campus biodiversity inventory of trees, plants, birds and other fauna; identify important habitats and use the inventory to guide their conservation and enhancement, including planting that supports birds and pollinators; and restore degraded land and green areas where feasible through replanting, soil improvement, erosion control and appropriate ecological landscaping.

  9. 9

    Encourage resource recovery for soil health through environmentally sound approaches such as composting and biochar production from organic and agricultural residues, building on the research already identified under RUET’s SDG 15 activities.

  10. 10

    Encourage research and academic activity on:

    • abiodiversity, ecosystem services and urban ecology;
    • bsustainable land-use planning and green infrastructure;
    • csoil conservation, land degradation and erosion control;
    • decological restoration and agroforestry;
    • esustainable urban development and climate-resilient land management, with collaboration among Urban & Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, IEES and other relevant disciplines.
  11. 11

    Involve students in tree plantation activities, biodiversity awareness programmes, campus environmental campaigns, ecological surveys, research projects and green-campus initiatives, building on the plantation programmes already conducted with students and academic personnel.

  12. 12

    Run programmes on biodiversity conservation, tree protection, ecosystem services, sustainable landscaping and responsible use of campus natural resources for students, staff and neighboring communities.

  13. 13

    Maintain records of major plantation activities, tree maintenance and landscape-management initiatives, and assess the condition of campus green spaces periodically.

  14. 14

    RUET will promote research on land conservation and optimized land use allocation.
