Life Below Water

01 Policy Statement

RUET is committed to protecting rivers, wetlands and aquatic ecosystems, including the Padma River and other water bodies around Rajshahi, from pollution and degradation. To fulfil this commitment, RUET will:

  • Prevent campus-generated pollution from affecting rivers, wetlands, and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Reduce plastic pollution and wastewater contamination.
  • Promote water-quality monitoring and aquatic ecosystem conservation.
  • Support research, education, and outreach on water resources and aquatic environments.

02 Actions14 actions

  1. 1

    Prevent pollution at source rather than relying only on treatment after pollution has occurred. Relevant units shall:

    • aminimize unnecessary discharge of pollutants;
    • bhandle chemicals responsibly;
    • cprevent inappropriate disposal of laboratory substances;
    • davoid disposal of solid waste into drains;
    • emaintain drainage systems appropriately;
    • fpromote responsible wastewater management;
    • gfollow applicable environmental laws and university requirements.
  2. 2

    Enforce environmentally responsible handling of chemicals, biological materials, laboratory wastewater, hazardous substances, oils and research-related wastes in all laboratories, workshops and technical facilities, with defined procedures for collection, storage, treatment and disposal.

  3. 3

    Prevent sediment, construction waste, chemicals and other pollutants from entering drainage or water systems during construction and maintenance activities.

  4. 4

    Manage campus wastewater for safe collection, appropriate treatment and prevention of untreated discharge; and prevent plastic waste from entering drains, ponds and waterways through the single-use plastic reduction measures in SDG 12, litter screens or trash traps at campus drain outlets where practicable, and regular clearing of drains and pond margins.

  5. 5

    Measure and reduce consumption, prevent leakage, reuse water for non-potable purposes where feasible, and protect campus ponds and water bodies from dumping of waste and debris.

  6. 6

    Conduct periodic water-quality monitoring of campus discharge, drains and ponds; carry out pollution monitoring, aquatic ecosystem studies and environmental impact assessment as institutional and academic activities; and conserve and enhance campus ponds and wetland habitats.

  7. 7

    Direct research, student projects, teaching and outreach toward:

    • awater pollution prevention and control;
    • bwastewater treatment;
    • cwater-quality monitoring and pollution detection and sensing technologies;
    • dlow-cost pollution-control technologies;
    • eaquatic ecosystem protection and ecosystem health;
    • fwater-resource management and sustainable drainage;
    • gwater conservation and climate impacts on aquatic systems.
  8. 8

    Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among departments, institutes and research groups working in engineering, environmental science, water resources, urban planning and related fields.

  9. 9

    Engage students through research and academic projects, field studies, seminars, workshops, competitions and awareness activities related to aquatic environmental protection.

  10. 10

    Disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, seminars, workshops, technical reports, educational materials and community and stakeholder engagement.

  11. 11

    Collaborate with government agencies, research institutions, universities, industries and other relevant organizations on aquatic environmental research and pollution-control initiatives.

  12. 12

    Run outreach and awareness programmes on water pollution, responsible disposal practices, wastewater management, aquatic ecosystem protection and sustainable water use, for the campus and neighboring communities.

  13. 13

    Ensure that all relevant activities comply with applicable national environmental requirements and university rules, and review water-pollution-related practice periodically.

  14. 14

    RUET will promote research and aquatic lives, blue economy and marine ecosystem.
