Clean Water and Sanitation

01 Policy Statement

RUET is committed to ensuring access to safe water and sanitation for its community, and to the sustainable management of water resources. To fulfil this commitment, RUET will:

  • Ensure safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities.
  • Monitor and improve campus water-use efficiency.
  • Promote water conservation and reuse practices.
  • Strengthen wastewater management and pollution prevention.
  • Support water, waste water, solid waste management research, education, and awareness.
  • Safe management of solid wastes

02 Actions13 actions

  1. 1

Provide free, safe drinking water at purified water stations on every floor of every academic building and in every hall, with documented filter replacement and periodic laboratory testing against the Bangladesh Standards for drinking water, and display test results at the stations; and maintain adequate, clean and functioning toilet and washing facilities, including separate facilities for women and accessible facilities, in every building.

  2. 2

Encourage reuse of bottles and phase down single-use plastic bottles at campus outlets and university events.

  3. 3

Campus waste water disposed through on site treatment by introducing septic tanks and soakwells, FSTP with scheduled desludging and maintenance so that no untreated sewage enters surface drains or natural water bodies.

  4. 4

Enforce chemical handling and disposal protocols in every laboratory through segregated storage, neutralization of acidic and basic effluent before discharge, collection of heavy-metal and organic solvent waste in labelled containers, handover to authorized disposal, and a prohibition on discharging chemicals into the drainage system. Maintain a chemical inventory and disposal log per laboratory.

  5. 5

Handle medical and hazardous waste from the Medical Centre separately, through authorized collection, never through general drainage or general waste.

  6. 6

Install water-efficient fittings in accordance with BNBC 2020, Part III, Chapter 4 (Internal Water Management), including dual-flush water closets, low-flow taps, lever or sensor taps and efficient showerheads, in all new construction and in phased retrofit of existing buildings.

  7. 7

Periodic leak detection surveys, prompt repair, and a record of water lost and recovered are maintained.

  8. 8

Preserve permeable open ground, keep built-up area within planned limits, and progressively install rainwater harvesting and recharge structures, with the Department of Civil Engineering advising on design.

  9. 9

Develop a Water Reuse and Recycling Policy for non-potable applications such as toilet flushing and landscape irrigation, beginning with a pilot greywater treatment system; adopt a campus-wide policy on the basis of pilot results; and run annual water conservation and reuse campaigns for students, faculty and staff.

  10. 10

Maintain and clean campus ponds and water bodies on a stated schedule, plant banks to reduce erosion, and prohibit dumping of plastic, waste or construction debris into them.

  11. 11

Check vehicles for oil and fluid leakage through the Transport Section, with preventive maintenance records.

  12. 12

Through the Department of Civil Engineering, IEES and related departments, support research and teaching on groundwater management, arsenic and iron removal, low-cost water treatment, wastewater treatment and reuse, and urban drainage.

  13. 13

Engage externally on water security. Collaborate with Rajshahi City Corporation, WASA, the Department of Public Health Engineering, the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority, NGOs and community groups on groundwater depletion in the Barind tract, arsenic and contamination monitoring, sanitation improvement, flood and river management, and citywide inclusive sanitation. Run seminars, training and awareness programmes and publish reports for community stakeholders.
