- Implement waste segregation, recycling, reuse, and resource-efficiency measures.
- Introduce sustainable procurement practices.
- Reduce single-use materials and plastics.
- Promote resource recovery and circular-economy initiatives.
- Raise awareness of responsible consumption and sustainable lifestyles.
02 Actions14 actions
- 1
Segregate waste at source into organic, recyclable (paper, plastic, metal and glass) and residual streams, with clearly marked bins in academic buildings, halls, canteens and offices; send recyclables to authorized recyclers; divert organic waste to composting for campus landscaping and soil improvement; and improve resource efficiency in offices and laboratories through digital workflows, double-sided printing, shared equipment and efficient use of consumables and chemicals.
- 2
Manage electronic, hazardous and laboratory waste separately through authorized handlers in accordance with national e-waste and hazardous-waste rules, and maintain a register of e-waste disposed of.
- 3
Implement sustainable procurement in accordance with the government regulations and RUET’s approved procurement procedures, across all academic departments, administrative offices, institutes, centres and laboratories that specify, request, evaluate, purchase or receive goods and services.
- 4
Give preference, where technically and economically feasible, to:
- adurable, reusable, repairable, recyclable and environmentally preferable products;
- benergy-efficient electrical and electronic equipment, appliances and machinery;
- cwater-efficient equipment and appliances;
- dproducts with reduced and environmentally preferable packaging;
- erecycled or recyclable materials of appropriate quality;
- fenvironmentally preferable alternatives to products containing hazardous substances;
- genvironmentally responsible cleaning, maintenance and operational products;
- hlow-emission and energy-efficient transportation solutions;
- itechnologies supporting renewable energy, energy conservation, resource efficiency and environmental management.
- 5
Consider the life-cycle environmental impact of products and services rather than purchase price alone where appropriate, and consider the environmental performance and sustainability practices of suppliers and service providers.
- 6
Minimize procurement of unnecessary single-use products and disposable materials.
- 7
Write sustainability criteria into technical specifications at the requisition stage, and allow evaluation committees to weigh them alongside technical suitability, quality, cost and compliance; verify at receipt that goods and services meet the specified sustainability requirements.
- 8
Build procurement capacity through awareness and training for personnel involved in procurement planning, specification preparation, evaluation and purchasing.
- 9
Encourage students, faculty members, officers and staff to use reusable water bottles, food containers and cups, to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging, and to use digital documents, notices and forms in place of paper where appropriate.
- 10
Prohibit the littering of plastic waste in open areas, drains and water channels, and route all campus plastic waste through the university’s waste-management arrangements.
- 11
Support repair, refurbishment and internal reuse of furniture, equipment and computers; redistribution of surplus items between units; recovery and reuse of construction and demolition materials; and research on waste-to-resource, recycling and circular-economy technologies.
- 12
Designate a committee, office or responsible unit to coordinate implementation: awareness campaigns, promotion of reusable alternatives, coordination with vendors, monitoring, periodic inspection and assessment, and identification of further reduction opportunities.
- 13
Run programmes, campaigns, seminars, workshops, posters and digital communications on reduction of single-use plastics, reuse and recycling, proper waste disposal and environmentally responsible campus practices.
- 14
Collection, processing, resource recovery and disposal of solid waste generated on campus are maintained with a set of solid waste management workers.
