02 Actions9 actions

  1. 1

Operate hall dining and canteens at subsidized, published rates, with a low-cost standard meal available at all service hours, priced well below comparable off-campus meals.

  2. 2

Run a confidential food-security support scheme through meal vouchers or free meal cards for students identified as food-insecure, administered by DSW and hall Provosts without public identification of recipients.

  3. 3

Set and enforce nutrition, hygiene and food-safety standards for all campus food outlets including the displays of menus and prices, periodic inspection by the medical centre provision of potable water at service points, hygiene certification of food handlers.

  4. 4

Prohibit the sale of unsafe, adulterated or expired food on campus, and take action against vendors through the contract terms.

  5. 5

Using portion-size options, demand forecasting in dining halls, donation of safe surplus food where practicable, segregation of food waste, and composting of organic waste for campus landscaping.

  6. 6

Run nutrition awareness programmes for students and staff, including guidance on balanced diets within a student budget, delivered by the Medical Centre.

  7. 7

Use available campus land for demonstration for kitchen gardening, fruit tree planting and organic composting, with no chemical pesticide use, involving student clubs.

  8. 8

Support research work in areas such as agricultural machinery and mechanization, irrigation and water-efficient farming, renewable energy for agriculture, post-harvest processing, storage and cold chains, food processing and preservation, and food-quality testing through DRE and the relevant departments.

  9. 9

These include farmer training and technology demonstrations in partnership with agricultural extension and development agencies, nutrition awareness sessions in local schools, and food-safety awareness for local food vendors.
