Published waste data, circular-economy infrastructure, a hazardous-waste SOP and wider community outreach are among the university’s next steps on SDG 12.

RUET’s long-term roadmap for SDG 12.

RAJSHAHI — Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) has set out its forward path on SDG 12, drawing on the university’s own stated priorities and the initiatives already under way on campus.

First, RUET plans to publish quantitative sustainability data by establishing a formal system to track and report annual waste generation, reuse and recycling volumes campus-wide.

Second, it aims to build circular-economy infrastructure — installing recycling stations, composting facilities and reuse programmes, paired with sustainable-procurement guidelines for university purchasing.

Third, the university wants to scale research into practice, moving projects such as the RVM plastic-collection system and the student-developed smart waste-sorting bin from prototype to permanent campus infrastructure.

Fourth, RUET will formalise hazardous-waste handling, building on the Hazardous Waste seminar and its partnership with Rajshahi City Corporation to establish a documented Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for hazardous and toxic waste. It also plans to expand the “Give It, Don’t Bin It” model and green-space conversion policy to more locations, and to extend workshops and awareness campaigns to local schools, manufacturers and surrounding communities.

On-campus halls, guest houses and staff quarters, which include shared cooking and food-service facilities, are also identified as a practical area for future food-waste and single-use-item policies.
