A snapshot of RUET’s responsible-consumption record shows more than 8 metric tons of organic waste fully composted, campus-wide collection infrastructure, and active training and research programmes.

RAJSHAHI — Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) has set out a clear snapshot of its progress towards SDG 12, covering waste tracking, recycling, infrastructure, awareness and research.

The headline result is organic waste. An estimated 8 or more metric tons of organic waste from campus greenery, hostels and dining facilities is collected for composting — and all of it is reused. RUET has achieved a 100% organic waste reuse rate, with the waste fully composted into fertilizer and applied across the campus to nourish crops, vegetation and green spaces.

Waste collection infrastructure now covers the whole campus. Category-wise dustbins are placed across academic buildings, hostels and common areas, feeding a designated central dumping and collection site outside the main campus.

Plastic reduction is an informal but ongoing practice. Departments use paper files instead of plastic ones, new students receive jute/geo bags in their orientation kits, the “Manobotar Deyal” reuse wall keeps usable items out of the bin, and dedicated awareness seminars are held.

RUET also held seminars on Hazardous Waste and Smart Waste Bin Management (both 27 May 2025), a student has built a smart waste-sorting bin prototype, SDG 12 is mapped into courses and research, and training has included an FSM workshop and smart waste segregation sessions for faculty and university authorities.
