Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology names SDG 12 as its main sustainability target, linking campus practice to poverty reduction, competitiveness and environmental protection.
RAJSHAHI — Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) has identified Sustainable Development Goal 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production — as its main sustainability target, placing it at the centre of the university’s wider development plans.
SDG 12 is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Its official wording is “Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns” — a call for institutions to use resources efficiently, cut waste and reduce the environmental footprint of everything they buy, use and throw away.
The university sees responsible production and consumption as a way to reduce future economic, environmental and social costs, and to strengthen its institutional and economic competitiveness. It also expects the approach to help reduce poverty in the surrounding community, contributing to SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
The environmental benefits are equally direct. By minimising the impact of production and consumption on land, water and climate systems, the university’s SDG 12 work also supports SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The commitment shows in a growing set of campus initiatives, from 100% composting of organic waste to smart-bin research and community campaigns.
SDG Alignment: SDG 12 (primary); SDG 1; SDG 2; SDG 8; SDG 9; SDG 13; SDG 14; SDG 15.
