Organic waste from greenery, hostels and dining facilities is fully composted on campus and returned to the soil as fertilizer for crops, vegetables and green spaces.
RAJSHAHI — Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) has achieved a 100% organic waste reuse rate.
Organic waste generated on campus — from campus greenery, hostels and dining facilities — is collected and fully composted into fertilizer. That compost is then used to nourish plants, vegetable and crop cultivation, and green spaces around the campus. The volume is estimated at more than 8 metric tons.
The result is a closed loop: collection, on-campus composting, and complete reuse as fertilizer, with nothing from this waste stream sent for external disposal.
The practice supports RUET’s green, tree-lined campus environment while eliminating the need to dispose of organic waste off-site. Crops nourished by campus-produced compost can now be seen growing along RUET’s pathways.
Beyond SDG 12, the programme supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through compost-fed crop cultivation, SDG 15 (Life on Land) through healthier soil and vegetation, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by reducing emissions from organic waste.
SDG Alignment: SDG 12 (primary); SDG 2; SDG 15; SDG 13.
