Overview
Every day, Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) generates waste from its academic buildings, laboratories, offices, residential halls, dining facilities and extensive campus greenery. Waste that is sent to landfill or open dumping grounds takes up land, releases greenhouse gases, and can pollute soil and groundwater, while the resources it contains are lost.
Key points
- RUET’s Waste Disposal PolicyRUET’s commitment to reducing landfill and increasing recycling is set out in the SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production section of the RUET SDG Policy and Action Framework (SDG 1–17), prepared by the RUET SDG Policy…
- Waste Streams and Their DestinationsUnder the policy, each waste stream generated on campus has a defined route, with landfill reserved only for residual waste that cannot be recycled, composted or reused.
Conclusion
Through the SDG 12 section of its SDG Policy and Action Framework, RUET has a clear policy on waste disposal that requires waste to be segregated at source, recyclables to be sent to authorised recyclers, organic waste to be composted, and the amounts of waste generated, recycled and composted to be measured. Every waste stream has a defined route, with landfill reserved only for residual waste.
