Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology

RUET records and preserves the heritage of its own campus: a student hall named after Liberation War martyr Lt. Selim, the university's legendary old bus kept by the Department of Architecture, and the distinctive inclined pine tree in front of the RUET Auditorium.

1. To commemorate Martyr Lt. Selim and the naming of the students’ hall in RUET

Lieutenant Selim Md. Kamrul Hasan (Bir Pratik) was a student of the Mechanical Engineering Department (67 Series) at the then Rajshahi Engineering College - now Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) - who sacrificed his life for Bangladesh's Liberation War.

Who Was Lt. Selim?

  • Early Life: Born in 1948 in Abhaynagar, Jessore.
  • Education: Studied mechanical engineering at RUET (then Rajshahi Engineering College).
  • Liberation War: Left his academic pursuits to fight for the independence of Bangladesh.
  • Gallantry Award: For his bravery and contribution during the 1971 Liberation War, the Government of Bangladesh honored him with the Bir Pratik title in 1972.
  • Tragic Passing: He was killed on January 30, 1972, in Mirpur (Section 12), Dhaka, alongside 41 other military personnel by anti-liberation forces.

How His Legacy is Commemorated at RUET

  • Shaheed Lieutenant Selim Hall: In 1982, the first residential hall of RUET was named in his honor as Shahid Lt. Selim Hall.
  • Campus Remembrance: The hall and the university community periodically remember his sacrifice through commemorative dates, memorial tributes, and student-led institutional activities.

3. The Inclined Pine Tree in Front of the RUET Auditorium

The inclined pine tree located in front of the RUET Auditorium is a distinctive landscape feature of the university campus. Its leaning trunk and relatively upright crown give it a recognizable appearance within the surrounding greenery. The tree contributes to the visual character of the auditorium frontage and can be documented as a potential element of RUET's landscape heritage.
